Posted by Greg Davis on

Transport Canada will be launching new regulations regarding drone pilot licensing starting June 1, 2019 meaning that anyone flying a drone over 250 grams will need to get their basic or advanced drone pilot certificate to avoid serious fines and penalties.

Per the Transport Canada Website on Drone Safety -

If you meet all 3 of these conditions, you're conducting basic operations:

  • You fly it in uncontrolled airspace
  • You fly it more than 30 metres (100 feet) horizontally from bystanders
  • You never fly it over bystanders

In addition to this you must register your drone.

If you meet any 1 of these conditions, you are conducting advanced operations:

  • You want to fly in controlled airspace
  • You want to fly over bystanders
  • You want to fly within 30 metres (100 feet) of bystanders (measured horizontally)

Basic Requirements

To get your basic drone pilot certificate you must simply pass the basic drone pilot exam. Make sure you have your drone pilot license on you at all times when you fly. The Canadian Drone Institute will soon be offering an online class to help you pass the basic exam.
